Shortly after the terrible disaster caused by the tsunami on Boxing Day, 2004, our club made contact with several Lions Clubs in Medan, in the Aceh province of Indonesia, some 250 miles from the worst affected areas on the West coast, to ask what direct help we could give. Their response was immediate - please help with the rebuilding after the clear-up operation is complete. The proposed project was to build a six classroom School for 250 six to twelve year olds at a cost of £23,000. With the support of the people of Retford, the funds were raised within 6 months enabling our colleagues in Medan to oversee the building of schools in 2 separate villages - one with 6 classrooms and another with 3.
